The Nurturing Garden 2008
Workshops for Families
Activities are held on Tuesday and repeated on Thursday 10:30 -- 11:30 a.m.
For children ages 5 and up accompanied by a parent.
 
The Children’s Garden will soon be bursting with color, flavor, and texture, from the Pizza Garden and Lemonade Garden to miniature baby vegetables and towering sunflowers. Children will tour the gardens to discover how plants provide us with many sources of nourishment, then make a hands-on craft project and sample a fresh garden snack.

Summer 2008 Schedule

June 24 and 26 -- Herbs That Comfort
Herbs not only make our food taste good, but they also provide comfort. Come and find out the various ways people have used herbs to relax, comfort and heal. Make an herbal bath bag to take home. 

July 1 and 3 -- The Busy Bee
Investigate the process of pollination.  Become a pollinator and help our garden produce the fruits we like to eat.  Enjoy a fresh garden snack.

July 15  and 17 -- Spice up the Garden
Do you like vanilla or chocolate ice cream?  Do you enjoy cinnamon or mint candy?  All your favorite flavors come from plants.  Come find out how herbs and spices enhance the foods we eat.  Learn to make herb butter with fresh garden herbs. 

July 22 and 24 -- The Living Soil
Explore the soil beneath your feet. See the insects, earth worms and plants that are growing, moving and changing below the surface of the earth.

July 29  and 31 -- Flower Power
Learn how to arrange a bouquet of garden flowers and even enter the Berkshire Botanical 2008 Flower Show!

August 5  and 7  -- The Pizza Food Chain
Find out all the different plants and animals that make up a single slice of pizza.  Visit our pizza garden and see if you can identify the plants in your favorite pizza flavors. 

August 12  and 14  -- Plant Part Salad
Do you eat roots, flowers, seeds, fruits and leaves?  Yes, you do!  Come explore the plant parts that humans eat everyday.  

August 19  and 21 -- Three Sisters Garden
Corn, Beans and Squash -- Why did the Native Americans plant these crops together?  Come investigate these three companions and how they help each other in the garden. 

Cost: $4 per child for members
$5 per child for non-members
Registration is required although walk-ins will be accepted on a space available basis.
Groups of 5 or more must register in advance.

Experience the wonders of food from seed to harvest in our Children’s Summer Day Program! This program is designed to inform, delight and connect children to the earth.  Participants will explore dynamic hands-on garden activities and crafts, plant seeds and seedlings to take home, and enjoy  fresh garden-grown snacks like herb butter and lavender lemonade!

Sample Activities
Make a mini-greenhouse filled with edible flowers.
Design an experiment using bean seeds to see which factors affect germination.
Explore the organic vegetable garden to learn the secrets of pollination and the habitat needs of our bird, bee and butterfly pollinators.
Discover the importance of soil and the science of roots, microbes, and worms.
Pick your own herbs and flowers to create delicious and fragrant tea blends.
Create a seed mosaic picture frame.

Ages 5 -- 10 (Children will be placed into smaller groups based on age)

Space is limited, maximum participants limited to 16.
All activities are age appropriate and the program will be held rain or shine.

Instructor Lydia Silva is the Youth Education Coordinator at Berkshire Botanical Garden . She is a Massachusetts certified teacher and has an MA in Education. She has taught in schools, museums, and nature centers for over five years.

Assistant Clara Buitrago is the Education Assistant at Berkshire Botanical Garden .
