Views of the Garden in Winter

While the greenhouses remain open, the rest of the garden is closed for tours in winter, but this view of the entrance to the Herb Garden and the arbor below, shows the interest that architectural elements can add to a garden in winter, especially after a snow fall.

The photographs below illustrate plants which offer interest in more than one season, as seen with the red branches of Cornus alba "Siberica" in the Vista Garden , the grasses which are particularly attractive in the snow, and the strong, evergreen conifers.  For more on ornamental grasses, see the article by Director of Horticulture, Dorthe Hviid. The Rice Greenhouse is a haven in the winter, offering a glimpse of tropical foliage,  sheltering plants that will be set out in the summer and providing room for art as well as horticultural classes.
