Herb Associates

Founded in 1957, the Herb Associates still meet weekly on Tuesday morning (9:30 - 11:30 a.m. followed by 'brown bag' lunch) from April until October to educate the public on the culinary use of herbs, to grow herbs and make herb-based products sold in the Gift Shop for the benefit of the Botanical Gardens. New members are very welcome! Come and introduce yourself.
In 2001, the production garden was moved to a sunny spot behind the Center House where the products are made. It makes an attractive as well as highly functional garden. The basil at the front of these beds is especially inviting.

Herb Associates at 40th anniversary celebration
Ann Braman, Rosemary Supkis and Jean Wilson, 40th Anniversary, summer 1997

Ann Braman was a founder member and is still an active volunteer. Rosemary Supkis, profiled as a Volunteer in the January 2000 edition of the membership magazine, cites Ann and Jean Wilson as two of the 'gurus' from whom she has learned to grow and preserve herbs. This was a celebration of the 40th anniversary, hence the lovely outfits. On Tuesdays gardening clothes are worn and people are too busy to sit until it is time for a brown bag lunch and herbal tea.

Traditional
Mai Bowle
Surrounded by spring flowers, with sweet woodruff flowers floated in the punch, the mai bowle is made to welcome the spring on May Day.

The youngest ever Herb Associate. Madelaine Greenbaum, left above, helped in the garden and the kitchen, as did her older sister, Joyce, seen here helping to prepare Basil Tomato Dressing..
Mustard, dressings, jellies and vinegar made using the herbs grown at the garden, are sold in the Garden Shop and at harvest festival. Gertrude Burdsall, one of the longest serving members, is seen here with some of the produce at the festival on a sunny fall day.
Extremely knowledgeable about the cultivation and use of herbs, Gertrude trains volunteer tour guides in the historic herb display garden. She  presented a lecture, "Herbs in my life" on June 13th 2000. This was part of the "Herbs in the Garden" series presented by the Herb Associates.
