Intro to Stone Masonry
Berkshire Botanical Garden
Learn the fundamentals of stone masonry in this hands-on class led by Sam Mercier of Mercier Stone on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The course begins with a classroom demonstration and Q&A, covering the essential planning and preparation steps for starting new projects or repairing existing stonework.
Participants will then explore BBG’s grounds, examining masonry in practice and learning techniques for addressing stone that has settled or worn over time. Instruction moves from planning to hands-on skills with masonry tools, finishes and fabrication methods, including traditional stone splitting, chiseling and other essential techniques. Ideal for anyone interested in stone construction, restoration or landscaping, this class provides both practical knowledge and a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship behind lasting stone projects.
Sam Mercier is a local mason currently hailing from Sandisfield, Massachusetts. His career began on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, where he learned from highly skilled stonemasons specializing in reclaimed granite and fieldstone. He moved to the Berkshires for an opportunity to work with a distinguished company that focused more on antique stone and brick designs. In 2015, Sam started his company Mercier Stone.
